Instructions to increase FPS in Apex Legends and remove the 144 FPS limit on PC

Instructions to increase FPS in Apex Legends and remove the 144 FPS limit on PC

If you’re playing Respawn’s new battle royale game, Apex Legends, you’ve probably noticed that the FPS (frames per second) is capped at 144 – although your computer can probably exceed this number by a lot. The trick below will allow you to remove this limitation.

It’s currently unclear if this frame rate limit is Respawn’s intention, but many computers with mid-range to high-end GPUs can run Apex Legends at FPSs exceeding 144, even with in-game configurations set to High.

In addition, if you play on a console (Xbox or PlayStation), you can only get 60FPS and no matter what you tweak, you can’t go beyond 60FPS.

Don’t turn off V-Sync!

Strangely enough, Apex Legends’ 144 FPS limit seems to be caused by Vertical Sync – the profile is usually disabled to achieve higher FPS, instead of enabling it.

However, for some reason, turning off V-Snyc kept the maximum FPS at 144.

YouTuber ImSpeedyGonzale explains the optimal configuration for Apex Legends if you want higher FPS instead of better game graphics. In his video, he said:

Before you tell me to “turn off V-Sync”. When I turn it off, it limits the FPS to 144, that’s why I set it to adaptive or adaptive 1/2.

The rest of the configuration is simply tweaking everything as low as possible. While this increases your FPS, the image quality will go down, making it a bit harder to keep an eye on enemies.

Some parameters affect FPS more than others, like Ambient Occlusion Quality

Some parameters will affect the game’s FPS more than others. For example, off Ambient Occlusion Quality improve the maximum frame rate and overall game smoothness.

If you want to see the FPS in the game, you need to enable the FPS counter in EA Origins. Go to settings in Origin, then ‘in-game settings’ and select the location where you want the FPS count to be displayed in the game.
