Undying is gradually becoming more popular since patch 7.27 was released. Hero finally found a place after many ultimate reworks. Although not necessarily stronger, but Undying is now much more stable. Today’s article will guide how Undying is played at a high level.
DIFFERENT PRIORITY
There are two main ways to build heroes: after getting a point for Decay (usually required for laning), players usually raise the Tombstone or Soul Rip to the maximum, and then to the ultimate as soon as level 6.
According to the stats, Soul Rip is chosen more, but both ways are effective. If you look at the skill board at all ranks, the only build with a win rate of less than 50% is to focus on max Decay.
Tombstone is extremely powerful, it is sometimes considered Undying’s true ultimate. The zombies slow Immunity-piercing and the large amount of damage forces the opponent to focus on dealing with Tombstone as soon as possible or accept the consequences of ignoring it.
However, the vast majority of gamers in Dota 2, especially at high ranks, are very good at breaking Tombsite. They usually have at least one mobile hero that can handle it quickly.
For that reason, Soul Rip is often preferred over Tombstone in professional and high-rank pub games. It is a very powerful healer or nuke with an extremely low cooldown, making it easy to change the game. Soul Rip has a decent cast range even though its manacost is pretty limited in the early game, but it’s not that big of a deal later on.
SOLUTIONS TO THE MANA . PROBLEM
Despite the name, Undying is usually the first hero to die in a teamfight. As a very strong support, the hero can take the lead and take hits from the opponent. While this approach causes Undying to run a level deficit and often farm less, the hero contribution is on par with what position 3 heroes can make in the early game.
The usual gameplay in teamfights is to turn on your ultimate, put Tombstone in a difficult position, and then just go in and absorb damage to your teammates. As long as the team is ready to support you, this often causes the opponent to split up, or focus on your Tombstone first, and then kill Undying. This will create a lot of space for your team at the start of the fight. The opponent will definitely have to use some spells to block and that makes your carry easier to breathe in teamfights.
Continuing to heal yourself with Soul Rip and Decay, you can live for quite a while, while the opponent is surrounded by zombies and beaten by Undying teammates. Damage amplification as well as slow movement speed helps a lot: if the opponent doesn’t have spell immune and gets hit by Undying, they are more likely to be out of position and can be killed quickly.
Obviously, this only works for the first 20 to 25 minutes of the game. After that, Undying should play safer, focusing on healing teammates, instead of taking hits like early game. But a good start and the ability to play aggressively around support is a huge macro advantage: the team with Undying can give the core more time to farm, while Undying creates space.
POSITION SUPPORT
Looking at the guides of dotabuff, we easily realize that Undying is extremely poor. The reason lies in the table game above: Undying is often killed in teamfight, which means you will receive less gold during the match. With most of Undying’s gold used to buy team wards and items, it’s not surprising that this hero has never been at the top of the NetWorth table.
If Undying can farm, then you should build popular support items. There are very few games where Glimmer Cape or Force Staff are rendered useless. Combined with the build that increases the cast range from the level 10 talent, these items get even better.
Finally, we have seen Holy Locket be up for Undying. On one hand, this is completely understandable since Undying is a good healer. On the other hand, there are many reasons why this item is rarely available. Paying an extra 2,000 gold for a Magic Wand is too expensive, especially when Undying is not a priority for farming. Of course, the ability to heal allies with Holy Locket is pretty cool and can be used as an alternative to Mekansm (for one target), but if so, we’d rather go straight to Mekansm.
The article has seen Holy Locket in a professional game, as well as some pub games, but it is still an item that is not enough to be on Undying’s default list.
EPILOGUE
Undying doesn’t rely much on Tombstone in patch 7.27 and this is a good thing. Now, Undying is a unique and interesting support hero: can surprise the opposing team because very few people remember how to deal with Undying in lane.
So how do you feel about this hero: Do you think Undying still needs more buffs to make it more playable or is it okay now? As well as your opinion about the Holy Locket build? Please comment on this article.
